We believe people need a sexual health care solution that respects their lifestyles, privacy, and time.
STIs IN SOUTH EAST ASIA
WHO estimates that the Asia-Pacific region had by far the greatest number of curable STIs of all the global regions.
In 2005, the total for these four infections was 70.8 million for the South-east Asia (SEA) region, equals to 39% of the overall global STIs cases.
38.6 million cases of trichomoniasis
22.7 million cases of gonorrhoea
6.6 million cases of chlamydia
2.9 million cases of syphilis
People are secretly anxious of contracting STIs, and are looking for discreet screening methods.
However, current services in the market failed to address these needs due to compromised privacy, social stigma, time, and costs.
People often disregard the importance of sexual and reproductive health.
“My mother always thinks that I don’t need to get cervical exams. People here are too sensitive and have little knowledge about sex education.” - Participant 18, User Interview (2019)
Social stigma on sexual health topics due to cultural attitudes
Pelvic exams are considered routine for married women, but often seen as unnecessary and undignified for unmarried women.
Limited medical resources in South East Asia.
The SEA region has a chronic shortage of medical personnel: the average number of physicians in SEA is 0.6 per 1000, lower than that in developed economies such as the UK (2.8) and the U.S. (2.4).
We are building a healthcare platform that facilitates prevention of STIs, and encourages people to look at sexual health in a different way.

THE STORY BEHIND
Founder, Ferne Health
“I grew up in China, and moved to the United States at 22. The first time when my primary doctor suggested I should do a full check of STDs during my annual exam, I was very surprised, even a little shocked. In my mind it should only be recommended to people who constantly has multiple sexual partners, those who live a “high-risk” lifestyle.
Driven by curiosity, I started having more conversations of sexual health with my friends. The infection of STDs is way more concerning in Asia, but people have more social stigma and to even talk about it. The “reverse culture shock” eventually led me to take matters into my own hands, and build a more accessible healthcare solution for it.”
